Veterinarian in Crystal Lake, IL

Located just south of Crystal Lake. Personal, privately owned pet care — rooted right here in this community.

Our Story

I still remember my first visit to my husband’s hometown. Driving through the winding, tree-lined streets by the Dole Mansion, walking along the lake, experiencing a small-town, close-knit feeling nestled in the Northwest suburbs — there was no better place to raise our four daughters, establish roots, and start a small private animal hospital from scratch. The largest city in McHenry County and just 45 miles from Chicago, Crystal Lake became our home and the foundation for Healthy Paws Animal Hospital. We sit adjacent to the southwest corner of Crystal Lake, a 5 minute drive from Huntley Rd and Ackman Rd, close enough to feel like your neighborhood vet, because in every way we are.

Healthy-Paws-Office-Front
Our mantra since opening in 2010 has been “Come experience veterinary medicine in a whole new way.” As a team we live and breathe this philosophy. Large corporate chains and high-volume practices have become the norm. We decided to be the opposite, treating patients as unique individuals, and clients the way we would want to be treated ourselves. This is our neighborhood; our clients are our community. The patients we care for are the dog or cat just down the street, the ones we see on a walk or at a soccer game, the ones we hear about at the grocery store or a local restaurant. That connection is what we believe makes us different from any other animal hospital in the area.

Supporting Crystal Lake Pet Owners

Fighting Fear

When choosing a veterinarian, while credentials and location matter, equally important is how your pet and you feel before, during, and after a visit. It does not matter how many titles a doctor has, or how fancy their equipment, if they cannot effectively explain options to you as an owner, take the time to answer your questions, or support you when you are most worried for your pet. If your pet is terrified and the veterinary team is not able to help them in a supportive way, their health is put at risk. Nervous pets often lead to preoccupied owners limiting their ability to absorb the information being presented in the exam room. This is one of the reasons why we liken a trip to Healthy Paws to a trip to grandma’s house, lots of treats and positive attention to help calm everyone’s nerves!

Spending time with families and using a variety of calming techniques for our patients sets us up for success. From care coordinators taking clients directly to an exam room, providing multiple forms of treats (liver treats, peanut butter, whipped cream, string cheese, and more!), veterinary technicians asking detailed questions, and our veterinarians explaining how to best help your pet — in this hospital, care is a team effort.

Options for Crystal Lake Pet Owners

Education First and Always

I love learning, I love teaching, I love veterinary medicine. The combination of all three is just plain fun. We do not expect clients to understand everything that is happening with their pets, that is our job. Our goal is for owners to leave our practice with a better grasp of their pet’s health than when they arrived, knowing they have choices, support, and resources. We explain our physical exam findings in real time, provide options and discuss pros and cons, and we let owners know what to watch for if things are not going as planned. We believe that our team and clients are empowered by learning and strive to incorporate it into everything we do.

Comfort for Crystal Lake Pet Owners

A Hospital That Doesn’t Have to Feel That Way

We do not have a large waiting area or lobby, but instead a front door, a welcoming smile, and an immediate escort to an exam room. It can be stressful enough coming to the doctor without having to face multiple strangers, smells, and sounds. There is no reason for cats and dogs to experience this when seeing the veterinarian. At Healthy Paws Animal Hospital we have treats galore, as well as floor-to-ceiling windows in our exam rooms allowing owners and pets to see the light of day and providing much-needed calm. There is no paying your bill in public with your pet anxiously trying to get out the door; in-room checkout allows every part of your visit to happen in one private location and provides the opportunity for you to ask any additional questions or just absorb all the information presented.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Healthy Paws Animal Hospital from Crystal Lake?

We are a 7 minute drive from McHenry Avenue and Rt. 14, just down McHenry Avenue until you hit Ackman Rd and take a right. We are at the corner of Ackman and Lakewood Rd. Crystal Lake proper is actually just one street away from our hospital!

What veterinary services do you offer Crystal Lake pets?
We provide comprehensive care for dogs and cats including wellness exams, customized vaccinations, dental care with digital radiography, surgery, spay and neuter, senior pet care, in-house diagnostics, same-day urgent care, and low-stress handling for anxious animals.
What is your approach to fearful or anxious pets?

Often we ask owners to visit us with their pet prior to their first visit; it gives us the chance to create a favorable first impression prior to them coming in for their first official visit. Again, treats are the secret sauce. When arriving for an exam, your pet goes directly to an exam room, no waiting area, no other animals, no sensory overload, just calm and treated. Every member of our team is trained in gentle, low-stress handling. We use pheromone diffusers, calming techniques, and a pace that lets your pet settle before the exam begins. Many clients tell us their once-anxious pets seem noticeably calmer on their second visit.

Do you offer same-day appointments for Crystal Lake pets?
Yes, we offer same-day urgent care during regular business hours. If you are concerned about your pet and need to be seen quickly, call us at (815) 322-5400 and we will do our best to accommodate you.

Dog Friendly Finds

Looking for some fun places to take your dog in Crystal Lake? Here are a few suggestions:

Hound Town Dog Park

A 3-acre, fully fenced, off-leash dog park inside Lippold Park Sport Complex. HTDP requires registration, vaccination records, and a keycard in order to use the park. Lippold is also a great spot for on-leash walks with your pup.

Veterans Acres Park

Wooded hiking trails where leashed dogs are welcome. Beautiful for a nature walk. Don’t forget to check for ticks and use preventative — Veterans Acres is an amazing trek, but not without potential tick exposure.

Dog-Friendly Dining and Drinks

Crystal Lake Brewing

Dogs are welcome on the patio. They keep dog mats and cookies on hand. Genuinely dog-friendly, not just tolerant. Bring something for the humans to share with each other also.

The Cottage

Seasonal dog-friendly patio with pub fare, burgers, tacos, and more. A local favorite.

Cafe Olympic

Outdoor sidewalk seating and a dedicated dog menu. Yes, really.

Julie Ann’s Frozen Custard

Seasonal spot where you and your dog can both get a treat. Every day brings a new flavor.

Starbucks (Northwest Highway)

Puppuccinos available on request. Outdoor, pet-friendly tables.

Cats About Town

While cats may not get to visit a dog park or patio restaurant, they have their own local resources. An important reminder for cat owners: Make sure your pet’s microchip information is current. If your feline decides to take a walkabout in Crystal Lake, an updated chip is the fastest way back home.

Thomas’ Tails

A family-owned natural pet food store in the heart of historic downtown Crystal Lake. Quality food, treats, toys, and accessories for cats — and three resident cats in the store. A neighborhood treasure worth visiting. (31 E Crystal Lake Ave)

Thinking of Adding a Cat to Your Family?

Crystal Lake has wonderful adoption resources close to home.

McHenry County Animal Control & Adoption Center

The county’s official adoption center, located right in Crystal Lake. Cats are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped before adoption.
