Our Story

When I think of Woodstock, I think of the vintage town square, wide open space, and quite honestly, all of my pets. This is because Woodstock is home to Helping Paws Animal Welfare Association, the shelter that delivered every one of our family’s animals to us over the last 20 years. My husband grew up attending Marian Central, and hearing his tales of years ago solidifies that for our family, Woodstock has never just been a town on a map. It holds a real place in our story.

Healthy Paws Animal Hospital is just 15 minutes south of Woodstock, at Lakewood Rd and Ackman Rd in Lake in the Hills. Woodstock pet owners sometimes ask what makes the drive worth it when there are other options closer to home. We think the answer is in our attention to detail, caring staff, and focus on client education all necessary to provide the high quality medical care your pets deserve. Our clients travel from as far as Chicago, Lake Geneva, and Rockford because what they experience here is genuinely different. We treat every patient as an individual and every owner as a partner. Our clients are our neighbors, our friends, and our families. That connection shapes everything we do.

Supporting Woodstock Pet Owners

Fighting Fear

Fear-free veterinary care is one of the most important things we provide, and one of the most undervalued things pet owners know to ask for. Fearful patients hold a special place in our hearts.

We know going to the doctor can be scary. New smells, weird sounds, and strangers petting in unfamiliar ways can all heighten the stress level for cats and dogs. This makes sense and is exactly why our team listens when patients show us they are scared. We respect the messages they send and do not push beyond those limits.

There are numerous things we do to make our patients more comfortable, from floor-to-ceiling windows in our exam rooms providing a much-needed distraction to a grocery store’s worth of treats. Even more important to this equation is our team. Experienced and degreed technicians are able to recognize signals from our patients and adjust how they handle them real time. Doctors are not rushed and thus able to discuss options with owners instead of just pushing through.

It is our responsibility to make sure that every pet we see gets the care they need. By working together with our clients, we are able to provide this in the safest way possible. For many anxious pets, that partnership is what makes the difference between a difficult visit and a manageable one.

Education First and Always

We do not expect our clients to walk in already understanding what is happening with their pet. That is our job. Our goal is for every owner to leave with a clearer picture of their pet’s health than when they arrived, knowing their options, understanding the reasoning, and feeling supported in whatever comes next.

We walk through physical exam findings in real time, explain what we see and what it means, and then discuss the pros and cons of available options. We let owners know what to watch for if things do not go as planned. An educated owner is an empowered owner, and we work that into every single appointment.

A Hospital That Does Not Have to Feel That Way

There is no lobby at Healthy Paws. There is a front door, a welcoming face, and an immediate escort to a private exam room. From the moment you arrive, the whole experience happens in one place. No strangers, no competing smells, no other animals making your pet more anxious before the visit even starts.

In-room checkout means you are never settling your bill in a busy waiting area while your pet is ready to go. Everything – the exam, the conversation, the checkout – happens in the same private space, at a pace that works for you and your pet.

Proud to Be Privately Owned

What many may not realize is that over 50% of local animal hospitals are owned by corporations. While this may seem insignificant, it actually changes many things. At Healthy Paws, we make all of the decisions, from hiring to the medications we carry to appointment times. We are not controlled by a board or CEO in another city. If we need to shift, we do it in real time, based on real information from real clients and staff.

We believe in the neighborhood veterinarian. Our clients are our neighbors, the kids on the soccer team, and the people we see out on the town. Being privately owned means every decision we make is driven by what is right for your pet, not a corporate bottom line. We take that responsibility very seriously.

Pups on the Town

Looking for some fun places to take your dog around Woodstock?

Bull Valley Dog Park

A 7-acre, fully fenced off-leash park. A permit is required and can be purchased at Village Hall. Closed until noon on Wednesdays for maintenance. A great option for dogs who need real room to run.

Westwood Conservation Area

Free entry. Features a spacious off-leash area plus dog-friendly trails through natural scenery. A nice mix for dogs who want both socialization and a good walk.

Emricson Park

A well-maintained leashed trail with water fountain access and shaded areas. A reliable spot for an everyday walk close to home.

A note on tick prevention: McHenry County trails are genuine tick territory. We recommend year-round parasite prevention for all dogs. Ask our team which product makes the most sense for your pet.

Cats About Town

Cats may not make it to a dog park, but they have their own important local resources. One reminder worth repeating: Make sure your cat’s microchip information is current. If your cat ever gets outside in the Woodstock area, an updated chip is the fastest way back home.

Helping Paws is one of McHenry County’s most beloved animal welfare organizations, and for our family, it is deeply personal. Every pet we have owned over the last 20 years came to us through Helping Paws. They have been placing cats and dogs with local families for decades, and the work they do matters every single day.

If you are thinking of adding a cat or dog to your family, this is where we would send you first. Animals are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and cared for before adoption. The team there genuinely loves what they do, and it shows.

Helping Paws hosts events throughout the year that are worth putting on your calendar. Whether you are looking to adopt, volunteer, or simply show up and support a great cause, there is something here for everyone:
